Uhlenhaut pai e filho Mercedes Racing Driver Who Never Competed

Most of today's car enthusiasts, Mercedes-specific or otherwise, would not know who Rudolf Uhlenhaut was. Born in London to a German banker and his English wife, Rudi, as he has become known, was an engineer who joined Mercedes-Benz in the 1930s. Working at first under engineer Fritz Nallinger with the development of the model 170V, Uhlenhaut eventually became head of the Mercedes-Benz racing department, which produced such notable Mercedes race cars as the W125 (dominant in the 1937 GPs), the W154, W194 and the W196. These cars were all race and championship winners.

But as admirable as Uhlenhaut's engineering skills were his driving skills. He could drive with the best race drivers of his time, and was known to beat even the times of legendary driver Juan Manuel Fangio, who at the time was Mercedes' Grand Prix driver. More than being able to drive fast, however, Rudi could interpret how the cars drove and handled, so much so that he was able to remedy the negative characteristics of the cars that the Mercedes racing department produced.

Today, it is inconceivable for a racing team not to have its own test driver, and top teams like Mercedes even have different set of engineers for racing and development. In the 50s, Mercedes had these all in one person!

Even though Uhlenhaut showed his skill behind the wheel (once making a 2 -hour trip in 60 minutes), Mercedes management did not permit the engineer to race. His value as an engineer was much more than what could have been his contribution in terms of race wins. After Mercedes withdrew from racing because of its Le Mans accident, Uhlenhaut stayed on with the company, developing sports cars until 1972, by which time he had become deaf due to exposure to the loud racing cars that he had so much influence on. At the time of his retirement, he had not owned even a single car.

Rosberg Finishes 10th in Hungarian GP

hungarian grand prix 597x296 Rosberg Finishes 10th in Hungarian GP

Mercedes AMG Petronas had a very disappointing qualifying session, but Nico Rosberg managed to move up a few places on the grid to at least finish with a championship point. Unfortunately, teammate Michael Schumacher was unable to do the same and had to retire after 58 laps. All this happened as McLaren Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won the race from pole position despite some good challenge from the Lotus drivers.

“In the race today, I had a good start and was able to gain three positions by the end, so I got the most out of it,” said Rosberg. “Being happy with one point is not an ideal situation though… I hope that we can do better in Spa after the break and we will push hard to make the improvements necessary.”

As for Schumacher, he didn’t really start of very well and had a bunch of mechanical problems that prompted the retirement. From starting at the pit lane after some confusion with the aborted start to a tire puncture and telemetry errors, there really wasn’t anything going right for him.

“This weekend is not one to remember, but then there are weekends like this which you can only accept,” Schumacher said. “I am sure we will be looking much better in the next races to come.”

It was Lewis Hamilton’s third race win of the season, and puts him in a prime spot to challenge for the drivers’ title with 9 races remaining. Fernando Alonso is still on top (164 points), followed by the Red Bulls of Mark Webber (124) and Sebastian Vettel (122), then Hamilton (117) and Kimi Raikkonen (116). Rosberg is a distant sixth place with 77 points.

For Schumi, this happens to be his sixth retirement in 11 races. That kind of sucks, because when he is able to finish, he always finishes in the points. He fielded results of 10th, 10th, 3rd, 7th, and 7th in the races he finished and is at 12th with 29 points.

Of course, until I parked them right next to each other I would have said they were exactly the same color! I have included the side-by-side pictures forreference. Can youguess which one is which?code 149 C250

HungarianGP Nico Rosberg 597x296 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix: Hamilton Gets Pole as Mercedes Sputters in Qualifying

McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton took pole position in the qualifying at the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix, while the Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers both struggled to get good runs. Nico Rosberg barely missed getting into Q3 and ended up finishing 13th, while teammate Michael Schumacher managed just 17th.

Following Hamilton in the grid order are Romain Grosjean (Lotus), Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull), Jenson Button (McLaren Mercedes), and Kimi Raikkonen (Lotus).

"That was a difficult qualifying for us today, and we need to analyse why it turned out like that," Rosberg said. "Qualifying is always a compromise and I was focused on finding a good race set-up for tomorrow as we may have more tyre degradation on our car than others, but it is still disappointing not to make Q3 by two-tenths."

"We have to clearly see that we did not have the pace to be in the front," added Schumacher. "I could have done a faster lap probably, without the dust having been brought to the track by Maldonado, but then I still do not think it would have brought me into Q3."

Count on both drivers to be aggressive and try to move up the grid right from the get-go. As always, we’ll give you a recap of all the action right here, so stay tuned!

2014 S-Class Interior and Exterior Spy Shots

2014 S Class SpyShots 2 002 597x397 2014 S Class Interior and Exterior Spy Shots

Bit by bit, we’re seeing the next-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class in its entirety. This latest crop of spy shot photos show not just a very minimally shrouded vehicle, but also some snaps of the fine interior.

We’ve already covered some of the exterior details in previous posts, but what’s interesting here is the interior furnishings. You’ll notice the redesigned steering wheel on this baby, along with some nifty details that are surely looking good. You’ve got the finish on the dash, complete with bezeled components. There are also fairly large LCD displays on the console. The styling is certainly a fusion of classic and modern Mercedes-Benz design, and should appeal to fans and prospective buyers.

The two-spoke steering wheel is different from the common four-spoke variant, and it’s got an elegant feel to it highlighted by the chrome as well as the buttons off to the side. We also see some minimalist gauges behind the wheel, helping accent the overall aesthetic of the interior while maintaining maximum functionality.

Anyway, enjoy the photos over at the gallery below.

Mercedes Gearing Up for 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

Mercedes Gearing Up for 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix  阅读原文»

f1 hungarian grandprix 597x296 Mercedes Gearing Up for 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix

After a decent but ultimately lacklustre showing in its home race at Hockenheim, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team is now ready to move on and is preparing for the 2012 Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.

Hungary marks the start of the second half of the 2012 F1 season, and it is also the last race before a month-long hiatus (the Belgian Grand Prix isn't until September 2). Hungary is a "challenging track," as described by Nico Rosberg, featuring 10 of the 14 total corners that have to be taken at 155 kph or less. In addition, 13 percent of each lap is spent just for braking. There are 11 braking instances in each of the track's laps.

Michael Schumacher chimed in: "As so often in life, this is, in my opinion, a question of perspective: if we only look at the points standings, it doesn’t seem so good; but if you look a bit deeper, and at certain results, then the overall picture is much better.

"I’m looking forward to this weekend’s race because I really enjoy the Hungarian Grand Prix. It’s a circuit where the drivers are always busy around the lap, it’s really demanding and there are barely any opportunities to catch your breath."

"It's like a street circuit but on a normal track because of the many tight and twisty turns and not so many straights," added Rosberg."The layout should suit our car but you just can't make predictions this year and you never know how it will work out over the weekend."
