Daimler Mercedes Benz Renault Nissan Pact New Projects in Daimler and Renault Nissan Alliance

In line with the aim to develop more fuel-efficient engines as well as transmissions, the Daimler and Renault-Nissan Alliance are now embarking on a couple of new projects.

There's a new project involving joint development of a 4-cylinder gas engine family. The engine is said to be compact while featuring top-of-the-line tech. It also sports direct injection and turbocharging. Overall, the engine aims to improve fuel economy and minimize harmful emissions. The engines are slated to be launched with Mercedes-Benz, Renault, and Nissan vehicles around 2016.

The other project involves transmissions; here, Daimler provides Nissan with a license to make automatic transmission systems that make use of Daimler's latest transmission tech. The transmissions will be used on Nissan and Infiniti vehicles.

Even as the partnership expands to a more global scale, the original projects in the pact are still on track.

"The collaboration achieved a milestone this year, with the first vehicles and engines from the partnership now on the roads," said Daimler CEO Dr Dieter Zetsche. "Furthermore, all our engineers are keeping an open mind, looking with fresh eyes at all potential new areas of collaboration."

After months of speculation about the 2013 driver roster of Mercedes AMG Petronas, it is now confirmed that Lewis Hamilton will be part of the team. Hamilton, the champion of the 2008 F1 season, is set to replace Michael Schumacher after signing a 3-year contract with the team.

"It is now time for me to take on a fresh challenge and I am very excited to begin a new chapter racing for the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team," Hamilton said. "Mercedes-Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share."

At this point in the 2012 season, Hamilton is fourth in the drivers' standings with 142 points. He won in Canada, Hungary, and Italy and also had podium finishes in the first 3 events of the season.

Hamilton had been part of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team since 2007. In his rookie year, he finished second behind Kimi Raikkonen, with only one point deciding the championship. The following year, he won the championship―also by one point, and also on the final race of the season―over Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

Sergio Perez will be taking Hamilton's place in the McLaren Mercedes driver lineup.

Mercedes-Benz had been part of the Brit's racing career early on, and 2013 will see him reunited with Nico Rosberg, whom he raced with in Formula A karting back in 2000. He also has extensive experience with Mercedes-Benz engines, from his Formula 3 days all the way to McLaren Mercedes.

As for Schumi, the future is still uncertain. "I have had three nice years with the team which unfortunately did not go as well as we all would have wanted on the sporting side," said Schumacher. "I wish Lewis well and for the team to achieve the success we worked so hard for in the build-up." He thanked the team for the opportunity and said that he will concentrate on the remaining races for the season. We wish Schumi all the best.

With only two races remaining in the DTM calender for 2012,Norbert Haug, Vice President of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport says that the two races in the next 22 days will decide the outcome of the 2012 DTM championship. This weekend, Valencia in Spain will be playing host to the penultimate 2012 DTM event at a permanent track outside the city. Completely resurfaced for this year, the Valencia track is acknowledged to be a challenging venue for both car and driver and the challenge will be how to find the optimum setup.

Although team driver Gary Paffett has an eleven point championship lead, now is not the time to relax because teammate Jaime Green is also a contender. Driver Paffett should have a psychological edge over all the other drivers though because he has been leading the championship since the first round.

Having driven the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in both a Mercedes DTM race car and a Mercdes-McLaren F1 car, the trackis very different from other circuits on the calendar. There are lots of slow corners, which means that traction plays a major role and tire wear is high. For driver Roberto Merhi,Valencia gives him the extra motivation to achieve another good result because this is his hometown race and naturally wants to get a placing in front of his family, friends and fans.

Making an appearance at the Paris 2012 show is this electric fortwo from Brabus. Clad in an electrifying green and black color scheme, this fortwo is a standout from the special edition Smart cars we've been seeing. As befits a Brabus creation, this little commuter has the makings of a pocket rocket with a peak power output of 82 horsepower. And with electric motors providing full torque from 0 rpm, this little car is a perfect machine for zipping through the urban jungle.

No Brabus creation would be complete without an aggressive-looking body kit and here, the fortwo from this premiere Mercedes tuner does not disappoint. A Brabus spoiler with distinctive LED lights remakes how the front end looks, and side skirts complete the look of a more athletic stance.

Interior accoutrements are more involved, wherein Brabus provides a bespoke steering wheel, heated leather seats and custom stitching with the Brabus logo on the headrests. A Brabus gauge cluster rounds out the finishing touches to this premium fortwo. At 30,000 Euros for the coupe and 33,000 for the cabrio version, the Brabus fortwo is not cheap, but then exclusivity, even in tiny packages, never is.

As you can see from the pictures, a Mercedes S-Class drop top is on the way. Currently, the largest drop top available from the German manufacturer is the E550, but this model is too small to compete with cars the very wealthy like to roll in. Cars like Bentley and Rolls-Royce convertibles and a slew of other open-air exotics. Having a large convertible like this is a matter of prestige and good business sense, so it's no surprise to see Mercedes' imminent entrant into this niche.

With its large dimensions, it's safe to say that the S-Class Cabrio will seat a pair of rear adult passengers quite comfortably, unlike some smaller droptops that force the rear occupants to contort themselves painfully just for the experience. As befits an S-Class, expect the latest comfort, driver aids and safety technology to be incorporated into the car, and probably a 6-cylinder as the entry level engine for this variant.

One of our posts a couple of days ago celebrated the triumph of Mercedes-Benz's customer racing cars in various series events around the world. But just to show you that Mercedes' winning ways are no mere flukes, we'd like to take you back half a century ago, to when a Mercedes sedan won the 1962 Touring Car Grand Prix of Argentina.

The winning car was part of a four-car works team composed of 3 pairs of German drivers and the female Swedish pair of Ewy Rosqvist and co-driver Ursula Wirth. Notable among the entrants in the Argentinian rally were famous Mercedes drivers Karl Kling and Juan Manuel Fangio. For this race, Mercedes chose to use the type W112 for the other drivers, while the female pair of Rosqvist and Wirth were given the use of the type W111 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE. This was practically a production model, taken off the showroom floor, with just a few mods.

Imagine the surprise of all when the German drivers fell by the wayside and the Swedish female pair won the race! Remember that the vehicle with which Rosqvist and Wirth won the race with was a virtually near production standard vehicle from the W 111 model series. Mercedes-Benz had purposely sourced a vehicle with regular steering as this gave more sensitive steering feedback. Only on the difficult mountain stages would Ewy Rosqvist have preferred a car with hydraulic power steering, as she wrote in a report on her Argentine experience: "Today I would have given anything for a power steering system!"

This victory not only caused a sensation in Argentina � the outstanding success of Rosqvist and Wirth took the whole world by storm. In addition to an appreciation of their sporting achievement, there was also amazement at the fact that two women were able to succeed in this exceptionally gruelling contest against a field of competitors made up exclusively of men.The victory of Rosqvist/Wirth in 1962 was the second success achieved by Mercedes-Benz at the "Gran Premio Internacional Standard Supermovil YPF" in a row. And in the following two years vehicles from Stuttgart again dominated the competition, which was followed with a great deal of interest in the important American market. The rest, as the cliche goes, is history.

Over the weekend, there was more than the F1 race for Mercedes to consider. Despite the less than podium showing of the factory F1 team in Singapore, Mercedes’ customer teams brought welcome cheer to racing headquarters by finishing first in three different series events and a second in another.

First of all, the HEICO-Gravity Charouz has won both team and driver’s titles in FIA GT3 European Championship while theALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport took over the lead in the FIA GT1 World Championship as a result of its consistent race results. In theAustralian GT Championship meanwhile, 1st and second places were won by Erebus Racing.The venerableBlack Falcon team also placed 2nd and sixth in the latest race in the Blancpain Endurance Series. All these stellar placings were obtained using customer-spec SLS racers. The fact that the SLS race cars have won and are leading various championships is a testament not only to the performance of the Mercedes SLS but also to the underlying philosophy of engineering excellence maintained by the company.

Understandably, Mercedes-AMG headOla Kllenius is very happy with these results. Said he, “I am very happy about the fact that the HEICO-Gravity Charouz Team managed to win no fewer than two titles in the FIA GT3 European Championship here on the Nürburgring. The start position in the FIA GT1 World Championship for the AMG Customer Sports Team ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport for the final in Donington on the coming weekend is more than promising.The guest entry of our AMG brand ambassador Maro Engel in the Australian GT Championship with one victory and a second position for Erebus Racing is also very pleasing. All of these successes on this race weekend are a welcome confirmation for our Customer Sports Programme with the SLS AMG GT3."

Invisible B-Class F-Cell Glides Through Hamburg 阅读原文»

For now, invisibility is a holy grail sci-fi aficionados, military engineers and probably the rest of the world's population. But plenty to attempts to fool the eye have been made, and the latest here is an attempt by a Hamburg studio to use the appeal of invisibility to build up the B-Class F-Cell's positive attributes. Showing some creative thinking to portray how the F-Cell is invisible to the environment, the studio proceeded to literally cloak the B-Class F-Cell with a magnetic cloth embedded with LEDs. The whole of the car was covered, including the wheel cutouts.

But this was only the first part of the process, the LED controller was then connected to a laptop which used special software to control the LEDs embedded in the magnetic cloth. To effect the illusion of invisibility, a Canon EOS camera was mounted at the level of the front passenger door. The image captured by the camera could then be projected to the driver's side of the car, thus showing whatever background the F-Cell was passing through.

Obviously, the human eye cannot be so easily fooled with such electronic gimmickry. But in capturing the attention of pedestrians and motorists as it glides along, the message that the F-Cell is invisible to the environment is passed on.
