Mercedes AMG Petronas went into the 2012 Korean Grand Prix with high hopes, but those hopes weren’t rewarded with championship points as Michael Schumacher finished 13th while Nico Rosberg had to retire in lap 2 after a collision. Sebastian Vettel scores the win and punctuated a Red Bull 1-2 finish by claiming the lead in the driver’s standings. This was the first time this season that any team had a 1-2. “There are some races where nothing comes together and which you simply have to move on from straight away,” said Schumacher. “This was one of them.” “Unfortunately this has been the second poor weekend in a row for me, and it's very frustrating to be taken out twice in the first corners of the race,” said an obviously frustrated Rosberg. “Kobayashi hit me from behind today and that was my race over.” This was the same story as in Japan, and it’s easy to see why the team would just want to move on. Here’s to a better result in India for the stagnating Mercedes F1 team.

At the Nurburgring, an SLS Black Series prototype that was testing burned down almost completely. But this is the reason Mercedes-Benz tests, and retests, its vehicles. To remove the possibility of any catastrophe befalling any would-be owners. As the top-performing model in Mercedes' array of cars, the SLS is already an extreme performance car. In case you haven't noticed, it has become a perennial frontrunner in GT3 races. With that kind of pedigree, a Black Series SLS for the road is but a natural progression.

Since all Black Series models are hardcore versions of Mercedes cars, no one knows as yet which component of this extreme SLS was responsible for the fire. It can be any of a host of possibilities. Leaky fuel system? Overheated brakes? Rubbing tires? Glowing exhaust?What we can be sure of is that the engineers from Stuttgart will thoroughly investigate this incident and will only release a Black Series SLS after signing off on the absolute integrity of the car. Unlike some red-painted sports cars that seem to spontaneously combust with regularity on the road.

After a fairly solid run through the Friday practice of the 2012 Korean Grand Prix, the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team is in high spirits and should head into qualifying with a decent shot at good results. Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg combined for 112 laps through the Korea International Circuit without incident and managed to put in some aerodynamic development as well.

Speaking after the Friday practice runs, Schumacher noted that the team should figure in the top 10 in qualifying and will work their strategy to suit this projection. "We have made some small changes, nothing major, and we looked ok on our long runs," he added. "Of course, I haven’t been able to study the times from the other teams yet, but we will try to secure a solid result this weekend."

"We had some small new things to try on the car which worked quite well, and we seem to be looking better here than in Suzuka," said Rosberg. "So I'm looking forward to tomorrow and seeing where we are compared to the other cars."

The MGP W03 really looks suited for the Korean GP circuit, which features 12 of 18 corners under 200kph (with 6 under 100kph) as well as four 280-kph-or-faster zones each lap. The team is looking forward to a solid qualifying session and is hopeful for some nice championship points come race day. We'll keep you posted on the qualifying results, so you'll never miss any of the action.

Fans of the Mille Miglia race are about to get a treat as the Mercedes-Benz Museum is showcasing the "Mille Miglia � Passion and Rivalry" exhibition. The exhibition started October 10 and is set to run all the way through January 6, 2013.

The exhibition is made possible through the cooperation of the Museo Mille Miglia. It features nine vehicles (from Mercedes and from competitors as well) that have participated in the 1,000-mile race previously. Aside from vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz SSK, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, and Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the vehicle showcase also includes legendary cars from Alfa Romea, Ferrari, and Lancia.

Vehicles aren't the only items on display―attendees will also be able to marvel at photos and texts about the different drivers and the races that made the Italian event so spectacular and popular.

The Mille Miglia open-road race started in 1927 and had a long run through 1957. It took competitive race cars on the road for a total of 1,000 miles, going nonstop from Brescia to Rome, and then heading back to Brescia again.

Five million. By any measure, whether it be sales, currency or units produced, it’s a significant number. All the more so when you’re talking about Mercedes transmission units, which are not a mere collection of casings, forks and gears. The precision work required to produce components that need to withstand hundred of pounds of torque and yet last decades means that quality is a foremost concern.

Recognized as a competence center in the Mercedes production network, the Gaggenau plant is tasked with producing three types of manual transmissions. The first is for the A- and B-Class cars that leave the assembly line in Rastatt and Kecskemet in Hungary. The are the FSG type transmissions. Also produced in Gaggenau are the TSG type transmissions, which can be found in the Vito and Sprinter vans. Finally, type NSG transmissions are shipped from here to the assembly lines at Bremen and Sindelfingen, which produce the C- and E-Class.

Gaggenau has been producing light transmissions since 1981. Intially, it produced the G-series transmissions. This was the plant’s product until 2003, when newer design transmissions were phased in, such as the NSG and FSG. Then in 2008, TSG type transmissions destined forLudwigsfelde, Dusseldorf and Vitoria in Spain were added to the product mix.

 

 

Brabus Presents Its CLS Shooting Brake  阅读原文»

The CLS Shooting Brake has only been recently released and already, premium Mercedes tuner Brabus has released its version. In its most powerful version, Brabus has seen to upgrade the 5.5 liter's output to almost 620 horsepower with a corresponding bump in torque to 737 foot-pounds. This was primarily done with a revised ECU and charge air cooler. Consequently, maximum velocity in this speed-delimited car is 320 km/hr or almost 200 miles per hour. To complement this performance, Brabus has partnered with Bilstein in developing a suspension kit that offers revised rates to take advantage of the higher engine output.

True to form, Brabus has equipped the CLS Shooting Brake with its 20-inch monoblock wheels to complement the Brabus body kit. Consisting of a revised front apron, side skirts and front spoiler, the kit also adds integrated daytime running lights in front and entrance lights on the skirts. At the back, distinctive Brabus tailpipes differentiate it from the stock Shooting Brake as it blasts past other cars.

Brabus though has not limited its tuning options to the top-of-the-line shooting brake. Revised ECUs are also available for the diesel models, and these are easily programmable from an authorized dealer. Of course, other Brabus appointments like Alcantara trim, revised shifters, pedal pads and even gauge clusters are available, whatever Shooting Brake you have in mind. The Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar 2013, which is available now, should be a great calendar choice for Silver Arrow enthusiasts and car/art lovers in general. It offers people some neat visuals that will surely add character to any room―Mimmo Rotella decollage-style poster art is mixed with images of S-Class models from the past.

Basically, you get 12 images (one per month, of course) of decollages and images of S-Class cars from 1904 onward. Each image was merged together by Monty Shadow, a Croatian-born artist. The calendar is intended to be a tribute to the luxury saloon models that have come before, while also ushering in a new era of S-Class design.

"With the Mercedes-Benz Classic Calendar, we are presenting twelve models from the long history of the S-Class in a new aesthetic setting," said Mercedes-Benz Classic Head Michael Bock. "The calendar motif for January features Emil Jellinek's luxurious long-distance saloon, the Mercedes Simplex 60 hp from 1904. It marks not only the start of the year, but also the origins of the S-Class itself."

Domenico Rotella, or Mimmo Rotella, was an Italian artist who became famous for using torn-up advertising posters. He used techniques such as psychogeography and decollage, which are apparent from the visual cues found in the images of the Classic Calendar, which is available now.

What’s more special than an SLS AMG GT3? If you answered an exclusive, special anniversary edition model, you’re right. That’s what the SLS AMG GT3 "45th ANNIVERSARY" is all about―the vehicle will be hand-built and the production run will be limited to 5 units, no more and no less.

There’s no doubt that collectors will be hot on the heels of this exclusive customer sport racing car, which runs on a naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 engine. It comes with several tweaks for both the exterior and the interior. The gullwing doors of the car come with a logo that says "45 Years of Driving Performance." The vehicle comes with a designo magno graphite matte finish, which was seen previously on the initial 45th anniversary exclusive model, the SL 65 AMG "45th ANNIVERSARY," which made its appearance at the New York Insternational Auto Show last April.

Designo magno graphite also makes its way to the light-alloy wheels of this SLS AMG GT3. In addition, carbon fiber reinforced plastic is found all over the vehicle, including components like the rear wings, mudguards, bonnet, and front splitter. CFRP allows the vehicle to remain light without sacrificing build quality and performance.

As for the interior, it’s all about racing. There’s a steel roll cage (also in designo magno graphite matte finish), a dashboard with a center console (containing the numbering badge for the exclusive model’s sequence) that has a matte carbon fiber finish as well, six-point seatbelts, steering wheel spider, and a seat shell for the co-driver side. The car will also come with an indoor car cover that contains the aforementioned "45 Years of Driving Performance" mark.

AMG brand ambassador and DTM champion Bernd Schneider has a hands-on involvement in the production of the SLS AMG GT3 "45th ANNIVERSARY," further adding to the story of this highly exclusive model. He installs the V8 engine into the vehicle with the help of an AMG engine fitter.

The lease on my 2011 E350 is up this month so I took it out for one last road trip! 5 days, more than 1800 miles and a little bit of mud later we are back in Georgia. The E350 averaged nearly 26 mpg in mixed driving – about 1500 highway and another 300 in town. I am still impressed with the comfort, handling and good looks of this vehicle. I might miss it a little when I turn it in!

Michael Schumacher almost came all the way from P23 to earning a championship point, but had to settle for a scoreless eleventh-place finish at the 2012 Japanese Grand Prix. Mercedes AMG Petronas teammate Nico Rosberg never set a lap after a collision in the first corner that also knocked out championship frontrunner Fernando Alonso.

Schumacher got engaged in a tight matchup against the Toro Rosso of Daniel Ricciardo at the end, but the Australian edged him out by 0.85 seconds to claim the final championship point at stake in the race.

With Alonso getting eliminated, Sebastian Vettel won the race and inched closer to the lead in the championship race. Only four points separate him from Alonso now (190 to 194), with Kimi Raikkonen a distant third at 157 points. Felipe Massa took second place, and Kamui Kobayashi took the last podium slot. He also became the third Japanese driver to claim a podium finish, and he did it in his home race, to boot.

"I have mixed feelings after the race here in Japan, because it’s obviously unfortunate to come so close to scoring points and not manage it, after a race which went better than we expected," said Schumacher. "

I had a good start to the race but unfortunately it ended fairly quickly today," said Rosberg. "In the first corner Grosjean spun into Webber and that also led to my accident. I began to brake but Senna crashed into me from behind which destroyed my rear tyre and meant that I had to retire."

The team is already looking forward to a stronger performance for the Korean Grand Prix, and hopefully, there will be some championship points gained next weekend.

In the UK, Mercedes-Benz relied on the social media and microblogging platform Twitter to determine the outcome of its latest TV spots for the new A-Class.

The series of ads cover 3 TV spots that aired during The X Factor over the weekend, with the first ad airing during the first commercial break on the Saturday airing, and the second spot in the next break. The third spot will then air during the Sunday episode.

The campaign, through Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, called upon Twitter users to vote for what actions the central characters in the ads should perform next, using the hashtag #YOURDRIVE. That will determine the outcome for the third spot, which runs 90 seconds and features a recap of the initial two spots.

The spots feature a professional driver and a musician (Kane Robinson) going to some secret performance, all the while being pursued by police, vans and helicopters and all.

Using social media has proven to be an excellent way to engage younger audiences, which the A-Class is targeting. By putting the outcome in the hands of the viewers, the campaign becomes more memorable and brand-building becomes more participatory and thus more effective.

"It’s a modern Mercedes-Benz that encourages people to do what we know they enjoy―to get involved," said Mercedes-Benz UK marketing director David George. "In doing so, we hope to really cut through, and create a positive, lasting impression on their view of the brand."

Seen recently on the Mercedes stand at the 2012 Paris Motor Show was the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric drive. This pure electric car is powered by a lithium-ion battery co-developed with Tesla. Range is touted to be 125 miles, with a top speed of 93 mph.

Apparently, the Electric Drive will be the only version of the Mercedes-Benz B-Class that will be made available in America. This, despite the brisk sales of more conventionally-powered variants elsewhere. It seems too that Mercedes-Benz intends to call its EVs Electric Drive henceforth, as a way to associate premium electric vehicles with the Mercedes brand.

The introduction of the B-Class Electric Drive to the U.S. market will see it compete directly with cars like the Toyota Prius and Ford's C-Max. There are other pure electric cars on the market, though as a Mercedes, the B-Class will be competing at a decidedly premium price point. But for upscale consumers who have been wanting a green halo car, the Mercedes B-Class seems to be just the ticket to push them toward that purchase.

Michael Schumacher is widely recognized as one of the best drivers to compete in Formula One, and now his career is coming to an end for the second time.

"I have decided to retire from Formula One at the end of the season, although I am still able to compete with the best drivers of the world," Schumacher said at a press conference prior to the 2012 Japanese Grand Prix that's set to take place this weekend. "This is something that makes me proud, and this is part of why I never regretted my comeback. I can be happy with my performance and the fact that I was continuously raising my game during the last three years. But then, at some point it is time to say goodbye."

Schumacher, 43, is a 7-time F1 champion. Much of his success was prior to his first retirement in 2007. He remained involved with the Ferrari team post-retirement, from being an advisor to helping in development and testing. Then he returned in 2010 to race for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, teaming up with another German, Nico Rosberg.

Since his comeback, it became clear that Schumacher can still compete with the best of the best in racing, but his advanced age, emergence of great young drivers, and often unreliable cars didn't allow him to replicate his past success in F1, which includes 91 Grand Prix victories, 68 pole positions, and 77 fastest laps.

At the end of September, it was confirmed that McLaren Mercedes driver and 2008 F1 champion Lewis Hamilton would be racing for Mercedes AMG Petronas starting next season. This was practically a confirmation that Schumacher's days at Mercedes were numbered, although it was speculated that he might be going to another team to continue racing.

The Becker Map Pilot (Option Code 001+ Pre-Wire Code 508) is now available for the 2013 C-Class, GLK-Class and SLK-Class. I have used it a few times and find it to be much more intuitive than the Nav+4 or UMI that we used before. The Pre-Wire option is $200 and the Becker Map Pilot itself is $600 and can simply be plugged into the dock. The biggest flaw with the kit was the lack of a detailed instruction manual. Here it is!

Thanks to strong September sales figures that jumped 7 percent compared to the same month last year, Mercedes-Benz was able to pad its lead over German rival BMW. So far, Mercedes-Benz leads by 5,221 vehicles in its bid to claim the title of number 1 luxury car brand in the United States.

According to a statement by the automaker, the strong sales can be attributed to the updates on the GLK compact SUV and the C-Class compact sedan. This helped the company reach 23,156 total units delivered in the US last month, compared to the 21,761 units BMW sold over the same period. In addition, Lexus―the luxury car marque of Toyota―was a close third at 20,386 units.

Mercedes-Benz took upon itself the challenge of wresting the crown from BMW, who won 2011 by a mere 2,715 units from longtime leader Lexus. If things continue improving like they are right now, Mercedes-Benz could reach that goal.

The automaker sold 7,872 C-Class units, accounting for an improvement of 15 percent compared to September 2011. As for the newly updated GLK, sales rose 66 percent to 3,206 units.

Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA, said that it's shaping up to be "a nice finish for the year" in an interview back in September.

This month, the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany is holding its 4th annual collector's fair. Focusing primarily but not entirely on Mercedes-Benz collectible cars, the fair will also feature other memorabilia like pins, literature and accessories. A highlight of the Mercedes-themed fair is a special edition model from long-time scale car manufacturer Minichamps. Highly detailed, this will be a Type R107 Mercedes-Benz SL with the interior done in a leather-like material. Only 500 1:43 pieces will be made, and will be individually numbered and placed in a collector's box.

In Cologne, Mercedes-Benz Market Launch Manager for Mercedes-Benz hybrid and electric buses Ulrich Piotrowski, together with Mercedes-Benz buses brand spokesman Roman Biondi, accepted the first-ever EBUS award for the company's fuel cell Citaro hybrid buses.

Under the patronage of Dr. Peter Ramsauer, the Federal Minister for Transport, Building and Urban Development, the EBUS Award was given in recognition of the efforts that have been made to introduce electric buses into public local transport, and is intended as an incentive to drive forward innovative developments in this sector. In giving the award to the Citaro FuelCELL Hybrid, the judges recognized the fuel cell, lithium-ion battery and electric motor components of the bus, which enables it to travel over 300 kilometres without producing any emissions at all. The judges also noted the use of a fuel cell that had already been deployed in the passenger car segment by the German automaker. Furthermore, with more than a dozen buses in actual service (17 in fact), the awarding committee recognized that the Citaro fuel cell hybrid was not a mere technology demonstrator but an actual working vehicle in use in the public transport system.

Compared to previous generations systems, the Citaro hybrid bus now uses 50% less hydrogen, due to improvements like fuel cell stacking and lithium-ion cell hybridization. With these improvements, Mercedes-Benz has demonstrated that it is now possible to mass manufacture drive systems that are virtually maintenance-free and very long-lasting. Cars and buses running on electric power alone with fuel cells as energy generators are now very much a reality. In terms of greening our technologies to lessen the impact of transport systems on the environment, Mercedes has shown that is leading the way. The recognition of government and scientific groups of the company's efforts only serves to spur interest and gratitude on the part of consumers.

DTM 2012: Paffett Retires at Valencia, Keeps Lead Heading into Last Race  阅读原文»

Despite having to retire at the 28th lap of the race, Gary Paffett was able to retain his lead over the drivers’ standings of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season. The Mercedes-Benz driver’s 127 points off 2 victories and 7 podium finishes are still 3 points ahead of second-placer Bruno Spengler of BMW and 18 ahead of third-place and fellow Mercedes-Benz driver Jamie Green.

Spengler placed sixth at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo over the weekend, while Green finished tenth. The race winner was BMW’s Augusto Farfus, followed by Adrien Tambay of Audi and Mattias Ekstrom of BMW at second and third, respectively.

The last race of the 2012 DTM season―scheduled for October 21 at Hockenheimring―should be an exciting event, as how the drivers finish should determine who emerges at the top of the heap overall. Remember, 25 points are at stake for the race winner. For the runners-up, second gets 18 points while third gets 15 points.

"Now I'll just have to quickly forget this weekend and look to the future," Paffett said. "We proved with a one-two victory during the season opener that our DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé is very quick at Hockenheim."

The team standings still has Paffett’s HWA Team on top, ahead by 8 over BMW Team Schnitzer. Meanwhile, with 61 points total in Valencia, Audi has overtaken Mercedes-Benz in the manufacturers’ championship. Mercedes-Benz had a solitary point off Green’s tenth-place finish.

With all the championships at stake in the final race, count on all teams to work hard in the next few weeks and then give their all come October 21.
