Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg managed to squeak into Q3 during the qualifying for the 2012 Singapore Grand Prix, but the team strategy called for them to stand pat and not go out for a lap so that they could get their choice of fresh tyres to start the race. That left the two on the fifth row, as Lewis Hamilton of McLaren-Mercedes blazed into pole position.

The Mercedes team is going into the race with some improvements to the cars, although the team has admitted that optimizing the updates isn’t complete just yet.

"We’ve made good progress over the weekend with our new aerodynamic package which is encouraging," said team principal Ross Brawn. "This weekend has been the first opportunity for Michael and Nico to try the upgrades, and it has taken a little while to get the set-up into a reasonable shape."

"Given the closeness of the second part of the grid, we made a strategic decision not to go out for a lap in Q3," he added. "And we’re happy to have the choice of tyres and new sets for the race tomorrow."

Schumacher is looking to score some more points to get him into the top 10 of the drivers standings. He trails Felipe Massa by 4. Meanwhile, Rosberg is stuck at 7th, trailing the distant sixth-placer Jenson Button by 18 points. The Mercedes team is firmly entrenched at the fifth spot with a total of 126 points, trailing Lotus by 91 points and leading Sauber by 26 points.

If you think Mercedes-Benz is only involved in Auto Shows, here’s something for you: the German automaker―under Mercedes-Benz Style and Silver Arrows Marine―just presented a luxury motor yacht model at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show.

The marine vessel completes Mercedes-Benz’s conquest of transportation modes, following leadership in land vehicles and together with the high-flying Eurocopter EC143 Mercedes-Benz Style. This helps Daimler achieve what it envisions as "all-encompassing mobility."

The Granturismo motor yacht is measured at 14 meters long and makes use of design cues from Mercedes-Benz vehicles, applying that distinct style to a luxury yacht. UK-based Silver Arrows Marine will be in charge of developing and building the yacht, with notable marine architects Tommaso Spadolini as well as Martin Francis involved in the project.

"Silver Arrows Marine is a new brand with the best team of experts for extremely high-end maritime products," said Mercedes-Benz Cars Design chief Gorden Wagener.

The luxury yacht is expected to be available sometime in 2013.

"Giving shape to a boat was an exciting challenge for automotive designers like we are," added Wagener. "Our task was to explore how to apply the Mercedes-Benz design language to the particular proportions and specific requirements of a boat." He went on to say that the design is an embodiment of "luxury, style, and pleasure" in true Mercedes-Benz fashion.

It is just usual that when a small car crash with a big car, the smaller one get pressed hard � or so we thought.

In the standard crash test, vehicles with the same weight are being stimulted to collide with each other. However, the most recent ADAC test made four smaller vehicles crash into a vehicle as big as a lower end midsized car. Surprisingly, it showed that the smart car despite being the lightest and smallest vehicle, can avoid the most common injury � the life threatening injury in the chest.

According to Daimler's website, they attribute the crash test success to these safety concepts:

The tridion safety cell protects its occupants like the hard shell around a nut. Its structure is additionally reinforced with high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel at strategically important points (more than 50 percent).

The tridion safety cell's longitudinal and transverse members activate the crumple zone of the other vehicle involved in the accident and distribute the impact energy evenly over the car's body.

And in case of a collision, the wheels also take on the function of crumple zones. When this happens, the front wheels are supported by the side members.

The rear-mounted engine enables a larger crumple zone at the front and acts as a shock-absorbing unit that absorbs the impact energy in a rebound.

Thanks to the sandwich-type construction of the tridion safety cell, the passengers are usually somewhat above the direct danger zone in the event of a side impact. Further, in the case of a side impact, the other vehicle almost always hits an axle that can absorb impact energy due to the relatively short wheelbase.

All interior trims have been optimised to prevent injuries to occupants. And the soft foam-backed lower instrument panel (knee pad) offers protection for the passengers’ knees and lower legs.

The door structure is reinforced by high-strength sheet metal at
key points.

Other standard safety features in the smart fortwo are ESP with ABS and brake assist (BAS), wide track width, seat belts with belt tensioner and belt-force limiter, safety seats with integral seat belts, airbags.

Indeed, Bild newspaper's comment ring true "only smart is smart."

Thanks to its innovative approach that focuses on safety, efficiency, and eco-friendliness, the new Mercedes-Benz Citaro (Euro VI engine variant) was awarded as the Bus of the Year 2013 by an international jury. The bus is the first production model that already incorporates the tech needed to meet Euro VI emissions standards.

The Citaro Euro VI beat out competitors that mostly fielded hybrid-equipped candidates. The Mercedes-Benz bus impressed the experts with its next-gen BlueEfficiency Power engines with AdBlue fuel injection and its emission control system that has a catalytic converter that has an exhaust recirculation system and a particulate filter.

Even with the new tech that the Citaro Euro VI incorporates, Mercedes-Benz was able to retain the space within the bus as well as the weight of the unit. This way, performance and convenience is not compromised at all.

“Our prime concern when developing the new Citaro was that we should be able to match economy and efficiency with corresponding gains in performance, safety and comfort,” said Daimler Buses head Hartmut Schick.

New safety features included a fresh crash element that is designed to keep the driver safe in the event of a collision. As a whole, the new Citaro bus was also designed in order to meet ECE R 66/01 safety standards that will take effect sometime in 2017, showing just how future-proof this bus model is.

Another factor that accounted for the new Citaro's win is its design, thanks partly to the fresh rear frame designed to accommodate the new engines and redesigns of other elements like engine flaps and lighting component clusters (that feature LED lights for added efficiency).

Of course, you can't win a Bus of the Year award without providing excellent comfort for the passengers. From the interior lighting to the design of the grab rails, the Citaro scored high in terms of passenger comfort.

Rumors are starting to heat up for the 2012 Paris Motor Show, scheduled to start at the end of the month. Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the Concept B-Class Electric Drive vehicle at the motor show, which will see a 100-kW electric motor and lithium-ion battery mounted on a B-Class.

This EV concept builds on the B-Class driving experience, enhancing the focus on family use and everyday transportation. The motor provides the vehicle with a range of 200 kilometers. Driving dynamics are superb thanks to the 310 Nm of torque. In addition, the battery is chargeable using any 230V power outlet. It also has rapid-charging functionality through high-voltage (400V) terminals.

This is the first step of us seeing the Electric Drive designation emblazoned on battery-powered EVs under the smart, Mercedes-Benz, and AMG brands. We also expect to see the smart BRABUS electric drive and SLS AMG Coupe Electric Drive at the Paris Motor Show.

The car is being billed as a "Mercedes trailblazer for alternative drives in the compact premium automobile segment."

Aside from the specs, the Concept B-Class Electric Drive comes with something called "Energy Space," which helps provide for ample storage room within the vehicle.

In line with the launch of its new A-Class compact vehicle model, Mercedes-Benz has launched a wide range of accessories that are perfect for both the car and the driver. These optional additions can be purchased through dealerships and sales partners.

For the car, there are a bunch of infotainment extras that can help the owner maximize the driving experience on his A-Class car. There’s a Bluetooth-equipped telephone module, which helps guarantee a reliable Internet connection for the car’s COMAND Online system and for making calls and for using Mercedes-Benz apps. There’s also the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone, which gives the driver access to the automaker’s app called Digital Drive Style. This app offers a bunch of features such as Garmin-powered advanced navigation, POI search functionality, and access to other stuff like Twitter and Facebook.

Drivers also get a piece of the action, with trendy and stylish products fit for the vehicle’s "young and young-at-heart" patrons. Gary Paffett and Jamie Green managed to get back on the podium with strong performances at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Germany, placing second and third respectively to take their places in the podium.

Meanwhile, BMW’s Bruno Spengler eked out his third victory of the season. While Paffett’s second-place finish is enough to stave off Spengler’s pursuit of the top spot in the drivers’ standings, he only leads by 11 points now. Paffett has 127 points to Spengler’s 116 with two races left in the season. Jamie Green is also a close third at 106 points.

For the constructors’ title race, Mercedes-Benz is still comfortably ahead at 295 points to Audi’s 266 and BMW’s 247, and the Mercedes HWA Team is still leading BMW Team Schnitzer, 151 to 133. Still, it really does show how important the final two races at Valencia (Sept. 30) and the Hockenheimring (Oct. 21) are.

On a related note, another Mercedes-Benz driver managed to set a new track record for the fastest lap. Roberto Merhi of Persson Motorsport clocked 1:22.575 on his DTM AMG Mercedes C-Coupe in Lap 40 to get the new record.

The Singapore Grand Prix remains one of the most anticipated every year. Not only does it feed the F1 frenzy for Asian fans, it's also unique in that it is the lone night race. Let's check out what's in store for the Mercedes AMG Petronas team once the lights on the Singaporean streets turn on for the race.

Being a night race, and also perhaps due to the challenge of actually racing on roads made for passenger vehicles, there has never been an uneventful Singapore GP―since the first one, the safety car has always found itself deployed on the track on race day. In addition, you take the challenge of Monza and double it, as evidenced by the sheer number of times drivers change gears each lap (80).

"Singapore is a one-off in lots of ways, with the city, racing at night and the circuit itself. It’s a brilliantly unusual race," said Michael Schumacher. "At first sight, everything seems more relaxed because the action happens at night, but of course it’s not like that at all… The nice thing is that the circuit is very technically demanding and it’s very tricky to get a perfect lap."

"The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the highlights of the season and it's such a fun weekend," added Nico Rosberg. "I really enjoy the Marina Bay track, it's a street circuit with a difference and with the intense heat and humidity, the sheer number of corners and racing under the lights, it really is a challenge."

The Mercedes team is looking to build on the momentum of its respectable finish at the previous race in Italy. We can certainly expect an action-packed event, from practice to qualifying and all the way to race day.

If you think being a manufacturer of electric vehicles means churning out model after unimaginative model, you just need to look at the latest concept car from smart. This is the smart forstars concept, which is slated to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show starting on the 29th of this month.

The forstars is a Sport Utility Coupe, or SUC for short. What this means is that the car gets ample room for a couple of people as well as their cargo. It also adds a dash of flavor into the existing designs in the smart lineup, although you might see the resemblance between this concept and the smart for-us concept pickup showcased by the brand at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

Why the name? According to smart, it's a reference to the video projector that is fitted into the front bonnet of the concept vehicle. This way, "film stars" can share their work anywhere, anytime―like, when stuck in the middle of nowhere, maybe. The name also references the glass roof that should provide for an excellent view of the stars in the night sky.

The concept model comes in a color called "alubeam rouge" with a generous addition of matte titanium and black for the accents. Hese are complemented by rhombus-shaped front and rear lamps, and the front headlamps are accented by "eyebrows," helping the front achieve a structure that is similar to a smiling face, giving the forstars an assertive yet friendly appearance. The interior comes with mother-of-pearl furnishings accented by brushed aluminum and some alubeam rouge as well.

Of course, it's the insides that really define this as a smart-branded car. It packs a 60kW magneto-electric motor that we've seen on the smart BRABUS electric drive. Top speed is stated to be over 130kph, and the lithium-ion battery supports 17.6 kWh of capacity.

"The smart is Europe’s most inexpensive series-produced electric car," said smart head Dr Annette Winkler. "Not only is it emission-free and fast, it is also possible to conveniently set the perfect interior temperature in advance with a smartphone, and it is simple to charge at a domestic socket. What’s more, with its powerful battery and integrated projector the smart forstars can transform any grey backyard into an animated open-air cinema."

Superior performance coupled with elegant style―that's the mantra of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Black Series line of cars. These are road-legal vehicles that push the envelope in terms of performance, and that is shown in this featured video from the show Car and Driver: Tested, which pits the Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series from 2007 against its more contemporary successor, the 2012 C63 AMG Black Series Coupe.

What difference does being 5 years apart make? That's exactly what the reviewer discusses in the video, taking both models for a spin on the track and pushing to see how both perform. Watch the video to see the full show for yourself.

A Stretch G-Class? Only In Monaco 阅读原文»

Captured recently on tape is this extended Mercedes-Benz G55. Enhanced by Brabus, it features revised headlights, bumpers and chrome trim. Done in black with black tint, it looks like a limousine that has the guts to go anywhere. And even though it's powered by a 6.3-liter V8 in this case, one cannot expect any G-Class, with its barn-like aerodynamics, to get up and go. But that large engine will be put to good use in this particular vehicle, as you'd have to be cross-eyed not to notice the extra sheetmetal (and weight) that was added after the rear doors.

As you'll notice, the rear wheel arches don't cut into the doors anymore, but the beautiful side exhausts still manifest themselves just in front of the rear wheels. Being a Brabus product, it's safe to assume that the interior has added luxury appointments that we don't get to see.

There have been DIY stretch jobs of the rugged G-Class before, but Brabus has taken this job to another level, looking very much like a factory effort. Which is what we have come to expect from this premier Mercedes-Benz tuner.

Milan, Italy is gorgeous and has a definite style. In that sense, it seems only fitting that Mercedes-Benz launch the new A-Class in Italy in style. That’s what the new "Visionary Store" is meant to accomplish. It is the first of its kind, and it offers prospective buyers, enthusiasts, and admirers to experience what the new A-Class is all about.

Located near the cathedral, the new Visionary Store’s opening was attended by Mercedes-Benz Cars Head of Sales and Marketing, Dr. Joachim Schmidt, together with Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team driver Nico Rosberg.

Schmidt said that the aim was for customers to experience the vehicle in a whole new light, both in the real and virtual senses. That’s because the store is equipped with Wi-Fi, Kinect, tablet PCs, and augmented reality, among others.

This concept store is just part of the marketing for the new A-Class, which is involved in a Roadshow that takes it through a whopping 90 cities in Europe.

Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg had a good showing at Monza, finishing 6th and 7th in the race, helping Mercedes AMG Petronas gain a bit of ground―although not too much―on Lotus in the constructors' standings.

McLaren-Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton claimed his first victory on this track, and he was followed by a surging Sergio Perez of Sauber and Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa of Ferrari in a race that saw the two Red Bull Racing cars retire.

Nico Rosberg is still 7^th in the drivers' standings with 83 points, while Schumacher is at 11^th with 43 points. Massa's fourth-place finish bumped Schumi down one place and gives the Brazilian a 4-point lead.

Interestingly, Rosberg took the fastest lap in the race, with 1:27:239 that he made in lap 53, the final lap. It was his second fastest lap of the season and fourth overall for his F1 career.

Both Mercedes drivers were on a two-stop strategy, and were running on an option-prime-prime tyre strategy.

"It was a fun race today," said Schumacher. "Although I must admit that, following our performance on Friday, I had secretly hoped we would be able to move up the field."

"Seventh place is an improvement on my recent finishes so I'm satisfied with that today, although there may have been potential for more," said Rosberg.

Mercedes AMG Petronas hasn't had quite a strong qualifying in a while, but the team was competitive in Monza, with Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg qualifying fifth and seventh, respectively. With Force India-Mercedes's Paul di Resta, who qualified at fourth, getting demoted 5 places on the grid for a gearbox change, the Mercedes drivers moved up to fourth and sixth on the starting grid.

"I think we can be satisfied with our qualifying performance as we have performed consistently all weekend," Schumacher said. "Solid points should be a realistic target for tomorrow. The fact that I will start from fourth is another small positive point, because here the even numbers on the grid are probably the better start positions."

Rosberg was also optimistic about his chances to score some points once the race starts. "Starting from sixth place here in Monza is a decent result from a tricky qualifying session today."

Meanwhile, the McLaren-Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button took the front row in the grid. Including Di Resta's car, that makes 5 out of the 7 fastest times logged by cars with Mercedes-Benz engines.

Seeing the Silver Arrows finish in the upper half of the points should be a decent expectation. We'll update you on the results when we give you a recap of the action on race day.

In the 1990s, one of the premier motorsport series were the DTM races participated in by Opel, Alfa Romeo, Mercedes-Benz and eventually, BMW. At the time, the rules permitted a lot of technical innovation, which Mercedes and AMG wholly embraced in developing their DTM race cars. These technologies included active suspension, all-wheel drive, traction control, active aerodynamics, ABS and moveable ballast. And although engine displacements were limited to 2.5 litres, configurations allowed were any engines that were in production at the time.

Mercedes-Benz’s weapon of choice for the 1994 and 1995 seasons were the W180/C220 C-Klasse sedans. Of course, after the factory race team was done prepping it, it had as much technology in common with a production Mercedes as a slingshot and a Hellfire missile.

Notable components included the M106-derived V6, which idled at 5,000 rpm and spun to a redline of 13,000. At that those stratospheric revs, it produced 440 hp. Compared to today’s roadgoing cars, that was an ordinary figure. Compared to F1 cars of the time it was only 15% down in specific output. An innovative mounting system using 4 bolts allowed the engine to be replaced in 15 minutes, which was more or less the service time allotted between races.

Just as innovative and interesting were the movable aerodynamic systems and automatically adjusting anti-sway bars that were adjusted depending on where the car was on the track. A learning lap would be recorded by the onboard telemetry, with an accuracy measured in centimeters. This data would then be used to move flaps in the air dam ducting as well as the anti-sway bars. Moving the flaps closed would effectively widen the front splitter, providing more downforce. As the car rounded the turn, the flaps would gradually open, moving the aerodynamic center of pressure towards the rear for less drag and better traction on exit.

This technological wizardry is 90s era, mind you. If you think that Mercedes nowadays if all about BlueEfficiency, remember that they are top runners in the current DTM, and we can only imagine what innovations the current cars are carrying.
