The 2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class, which is set for a September launch, will sport a nifty app called Glympse. It offers real-time location sharing so that you can update your colleagues, friends, and family in case you're already late for a meeting or a party or if you simply want to let them know you're really already on the way.
Basically, Glympse allows drivers to shoot a text or even an e-mail to their contacts, and the text comes with a link that shows his or her real-time location. The link can be set to expire after some time so that the location sharing gets cancelled.
Glympse is available for Apple, Android, Windows Phone 7, and Blackberry mobile devices, and the app has around 3 million total downloads so far. It is likely to be integrated into Mercedes-Benz's nifty infotainment system, mbrace2, which allows drivers to have access to apps that can aid them as they drive.
Of course, you might want to turn Glympse off whenever you sneak out to go out with your friends. You don't always have to share everything!
Here’s one Guinness world record you might not have heard about: the farthest golf ball shot caught by a man in a moving car. The feat was accomplished on an SLS AMG driven by David Coulthard, the former F1 competitor who is now driving for Mercedes-Benz’s Mucke Motorsport team in the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters championship.
Pro golfer Jake Shepherd shot the golf ball through the air, clocked at a peak of 178 mph. Shepherd was 900 feet away from the SLS AMG, and the record was achieved within a mere 2 attempts.
"This world record attempt is definitely one of the most unusual things I've ever been asked to do with a car," said Coulthard. "Jake Shepherd was great to work with and the performance of the SLS AMG Roadster made driving to catch a mid-air golf ball even more exciting. I am honored to have received the Guinness World Record for the furthest golf shot caught in a car."
Look forward to the ad campaign that showcases this feat. It is expected to air sometime in early July, and even if you don’t see it on your local channels, chances are there will be videos available on the Web. Don’t worry―we’ll make sure to post it here when the time comes, so watch out for that!
