In what must be more than welcome news for Mercedes and its parent Daimler, sales for the compact A-Class are exceeding expectations, to the point that its Rastatt plant will be running three shifts to cover demand. Indications for very strong demand were already evident since the launch of the A-Class in June, when more than 70,000 units were ordered following the market release.
With the demand, the Rastatt plant has employed an additional 500 workers on a permanent basis. Already, the Rastatt complex employs 6,500 people where, apart from the A-Class, the B-Class is also being produced. Mercedes's upcoming compact SUV is also slated to be built there. In addition to the Rastatt plant, the Kecskemét plant is also manufacturing Mercedes' compact models. In anticipation of demand and to reduce waiting periods for existing orders, Mercedes has also contracted with Valmet Automotive to produce 100,000 A-Class vehicles from 2013 to 2016.
Mercedes-Benz's new SL has picked up yet another award in recognition of its groundbreaking advances in the car's design. Garnering 1st place at the 2012 EuroCarBody Awards, the SL was recognized for the intelligent design methods that were adopted in producing the all-aluminum structure. As has been pointed out by the carmaker, the new SL's body is 110 kilos lighter compared to a similarly-sized body that would use traditional steel structures. In fact, the current SL's structure is 140 kilos lighter than the SL it replaced.
All this was recognized by the more than 500 industry representatives who cast their votes at the 14th Global Car Body Benchmarking Conference held in Bad Nauheim in Germany. In casting their votes, these auto industry experts considered things like development and design concepts, material development and application, production efficiency, customer value and engineering focus. As such, these experts have recognized the new standards that Mercedes-Benz has once again introduced in vehicle production.
