A lot of smart fortwo owners gathered at the smart times event in Antwerp. In that occasion, these small car enthusiasts showcased their prized vehicles and mingled with other people of the same interest.

In the same event, Daimler announced that they are releasing the four door version of the smart car again, in year 2014.

If you can still remember, the smart forfour was made and launched before, between April 2004 and July 2006. But the numbers were not quite what they expected, so they stopped production. But Daimler, with their partner Renault-Nissan, deemed that it is now the time to introduce it to the market again. And it was made official when the smart big boss Dr.Annette Winkler mentioned in smart times, “… do not worry, by 2014 we will again have the 4-door available! ”

Modern Horsepower has been tuning Mercedes and AMG cars which are very powerful and dynamic. To add to the list of their numerous records, their latest project, 2012 E63 AMG became the World's Quickest M157.

The BiTurbo V8 car split the 60-130mph in 7.71 seconds, beating the previous holder of the record by .28 seconds. All these are in the Official 60-130mph List of 6SpeedOnline.com.

Modern Horsepower LLC, proven to be one of the most dynamic Mercedes Benz & AMG tuners in recent history, has added yet another World Record to their already impressive list of accolades; this time in their project 2012 E63 AMG (M157 BiTurbo V8). The World's Quickest M157 in MHP S2 trim ran the 60-130mph split in 7.71 seconds, defeating the previous M157 record holder at 7.99 seconds by a significant .28 seconds as certified and recorded on http://www.6speedonline.com Official 60-130mph List–the industry's benchmark for credible and verifiable VBox data. For frame of reference that's three hundreds of a second quicker than your neighbors Ferrari F458 (7.74 seconds) despite it carrying 1100lbs less mass. Additional perspective can be provided by reviewing a few other notable times: Lamborghini LP640: 7.85 seconds, 2012 Nissan GT-R: 9.4 seconds, with Porsche's Panamera TT, a direct competitor to the M157 BiTurbo E63, requiring 10.14 seconds to complete the same task.

Via the verified VBox submission (also viewable on http://www.dragtimes.com) you can also see that the MHP S2 E63 accelerated from 60-110 in 4.94 seconds, meaning the lightly modified sedan from Affalterbach was gaining over 1mph every tenth of a second, or over 10mph every second, during that 50mph spread.

MHP's M157 endeavors began immediately after taking delivery of their non PP 2012 E63. Within the first two weeks of ownership and with MHP v3 CDT or software remapping alone, the car jumped from 487rwhp/495rwtq SAE on 93 octane using a Dyno Jet dynamometer, to an incredible 618rwhp/740rwtq SAE on the same 93 octane fuel―this also showing how highly underrated the factory BiTurbo V8s truly are. Making for gains of 131rwhp/245rwtq SAE, translated into crankshaft numbers the tune only gains are a market leading 160HP & 298lb/ft, totaling out at 753HP and 873lb/ft of torque utilizing stock air filters to boot.

MHP's Stage 2 kit for M157 E63 and CLS63s includes replacing the entire factory exhaust from the twin turbos to the tips, creating an entirely new, more powerful and efficient 100% bolt-on exhaust. MHP's solution to the restrictive four 500cpi catalytics and non-mandrel bent 2.75" tubing is a full 3" U.S. Stainless Steel design that includes standard V-Band clamped test pipes with optional 200cpi metallic substrate catalytic converters (owners can swap for track days in under 2 minutes), 3" 304 SS Tubing throughout, with X-Pipe, resonators, two choices in mufflers (Race & Street) and inert gas backpurged 316 TIG welds. Modern Horsepower President Andrew Cluck explained " We (MHP) don't view cutting and welding aftermarket downpipes and/or cat delete kits into the factory exhaust as a satisfactory solution for any vehicle, especially an AMG product. Optimal performance only comes from a clean-sheet redesign, anything less is more or less a band-aid." MHP also plans to make a similar full exhaust in both Race and Street trims for the ML63 and its niche market of Uber-SUV performance junkies. As with all of MHP's exhausts, both Race and Street systems carry a Lifetime Warranty on all parts and workmanship. MHPs 180F modified OEM thermostat and drop in air-filters top off the record setting S2 E63 package, and based on the 60-130 data and preliminary dynos MHP says to expect 640-650rwhp and 775-780rwtq SAE on 93 octane with S2 or S2+ M157 Packages. Again, translated into crankshaft numbers that equates to 786HP and 920lb/ft of torque on 93 octane from a true bolt-on package. Stage 3 with an anticipated release date of 10/1/12 will incorporate additional cooling modifications with Stage 4 cars bringing upgraded turbos, engine internals and transmission modifications to the table by the time SEMA rolls around.
MHP also announced it is just weeks from releasing the World's first equal length, stepped longtube headers for the SLS AMG and upcoming SLS GT AMG. When Mr. Cluck was asked about their decision to go with such a complex header design he responded with the following: "While we find the single 1 7/8" primary diameter of our C63 coupe and Sedan Longtube Headers to be sufficient for the M156 series of engines, the amount of changes made to the M159/SLS engines necessitated and warranted a full on Race longtube header design." Said improvements were explained to include huge OEM airflow improvements on the inlet side of the motor from the airboxes to the short runner velocity stack type intake manifold, and even +1mm larger exhaust valves with larger exhaust ports in the cylinder heads themselves. "By going with a stepped design we ensure that we achieve maximum horsepower and torque gains over as broad an rpm band as possible–we are highly confident in our design and are extremely excited to begin testing. Thankfully the SLS chassis affords us significantly more room under the car vs M156 variants, which allowed us to completely uncork what is unquestionably one of the, if not the, last of the great naturally aspirated V8s in the World." MHP promises a custom high velocity cone/spike merge collector leading back via 3" 304 S.S. Tubing to an X pipe and resonators of the same diameter. "As always we look to make more safe horsepower and torque with similar modifications than our competitors, as proven at the track, via VBox and on the dyno. We'll then jump to our Stage 3 & 4 development including hand ported cylinder heads and custom SLS specific grind billet rifle drilled 9310 camshafts, with an ultimate goal of 580-600rwhp naturally aspirated for the SLS and SLS GT AMG and future M159 variants."

Mr. Cluck closed in saying: "We look forward to setting new records in the mile and on the dyno with the S2 E63 and S2 SLS in the coming weeks. " Modern Horsepower is still the only Mercedes Benz and AMG tuner in the World to manufacture camshafts and matched tuning for the M156 and M159 series of engines including grinds for naturally aspirated, supercharged, nitrous and custom applications.

Vath has been tuning Mercedes �Benz vehicles for quite some time now, so we kind of expect them to create a new one based on the popular E500. Dubbed as the V50S, it’s all beefed up as it has customer air intake and ECU that brings the power up to 520HP and torque of 810Nm. It sprints at 0 to 5 mph in just 4.5 seconds. Another amazing change here is its braking system, which comes with 390mm rotors and 6-piston front axle.

The exterior, on the other hand, has carbon fiber body kit which has a rear diffuser, a trunk mounted spoiler, a revised grill and a front spoiler. The wheels, of course, cannot be left behind, as it's a massive 20-inch alloy fitted with 245/30/20 and 285/25/20 tires. In the inside, it boasts of sports steering wheel, a wood-trimmed speedometer and high-quality leather upholstery.

The price? $40,050, tax not yet included.

V12 engines are known for many reasons, not least the obscene power that they can put out. Mercedes has often used these luxury powerhouses in flagship models to create hugely fast yet refined vehicles. In the face of increased pressure from the economically minded however, V12s are becoming increasingly rare. Reducing engine size seems to be a current trend too, with the A45 having only a turbocharged 2.0 liter.

Fortunately, Mercedes have confirmed that these ultimate engines will remain in the line-up, and have announced their continuation for the time being. At the same time however, the luxury automaker has decided not to develop or produce their own V12s. But fear not, they will instead be outsourced to performance obsessed AMG.

Now that can't be a bad thing. AMG already have considerable V12 experience, with the engines being used in the AMG engineered SL65, S65, CL65 and G65. AMG also supply a 12-cylinder for the Pagani Huayra. All are incredible cars, so we're not worried. In fact, it's exciting. All of these engines produce upwards of 600bhp and enormous amounts of torque, so it's unlikely any of the V12s produced will be much less powerful than that.

The move makes sense, as the number of all-Mercedes models sporting a V12 is currently very thin on the ground. There are also indications that some smaller supercar manufacturers might want to use AMG's V12 in their future concepts. With the new AMG inspired C-Class Coupes proving very popular too, some are suggesting that AMG might be playing a bigger role in the Mercedes line-up in the future.

While the current crop of V12 cars carry a hefty price tag, the reluctance of many to buy a car with a large engine means that second-hand V12s are a very realistic proposition. There are such used cars for sale at www.exchangeandmart.co.uk.

The first car to use an AMG made V12 in the standard Mercedes line-up is likely to be the upcoming S600, which is expected out in the next year or two. It will probably feature a detuned version of the current 6.0 litre bi-turbo V12.

The V12 is dead. Long live the V12.

Jamie Green reclaimed the number 2 spot in the drivers’ standings of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season after finishing fourth at the Zandvoort race. With 93 points, Green overtook Bruno Spengler of BMW, who had 91 points after finishing sixth in the race.

Gary Paffett still leads the drivers’ standings even despite an uninspiring 7th place finish. Race winner Edoardo Mortara of Audi moved up to fourth in the standings.

While it’s been two consecutive disappointing outings for the Mercedes-Benz teams in DTM, starting from the Nurburgring race right after the midway break, the automaker still leads all of the three DTM categories: drivers, teams, and constructors. The Paffett-powered THOMAS SABO / Mercedes-Benz HWA Team leads all teams, 39 points ahead of the closest competitor, which is Mercedes AMG.

"It's time now to focus on the remaining races," said Green. "We are in the top positions, P1 and 2, in the championship so Gary and I have a very good platform for the last three races of the season."

The next race is on September 16, at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Germany.

The railway company SNCF launched a new business model by using touring coaches that are comfortable. Twenty six new vehicles of the ComfortClass 400 S 416 GT-HD model will link Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam and London and all these 26 are Setra buses.

“The Setra coaches will allow us to offer our customers an extremely pleasant way of travelling, with safety as our top priority, ” said Barbara Dalibard, member of the SNCF Executive Board.

With its fuel-efficiency, Setra is the best bus that a business can use. Comfort and style of the vehicle is great too, thus their clients and tourists will be satisfied.

Stuttgart/Paris � France’s state-owned railway company SNCF is launching a new business model that relies on the use of comfortable touring coaches � and thus on the Setra brand. The 26 new vehicles of the ComfortClass 400 S 416 GT-HD model will be linking the major cities of Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and London from 23 July 2012.

The excellent fuel efficiency of these comfortably appointed coaches makes them absolutely ideal for use on long-distance routes. Passengers are able to relax in comfort on these routes, over distances of up to 500 kilometres, in 48 Setra Voyage Plus seats. A special feature of the coaches, which offer full access for the disabled, is the fact that three pairs of cinema-style seats are fixed to “airline” rails, giving the flexibility to move them around to make additional space for a wheelchair. The requisite disabled lift with lift door and lift flap is located on the right-hand side of the vehicle, to the rear of the front axle. This installation, created specifically for the SNCF, together with the special compact design of the lift, ensures that the operator still has sufficient stowage space for luggage in this section of the load compartment. The Lane Assistant system, an Adaptive Cruise Control with Active Brake Assist (ABA) and a Front Collision Guard (FCG) add up to ensure the highest possible level of safety for passengers, drivers and tour guides.

Advice and support right from the start

In developing its new long-distance bus routes, the French state-owned company is venturing into completely new territory. Turning to the Ulm-based brand even before the project began meant that all the requests and requirements of this major customer could be incorporated in a specifically developed vehicle design that could then be launched, on schedule, within just one year. Since submission of its first export report, Setra has been on hand to offer advice and support as a full-service provider. The brand, part of the Stuttgart-based Daimler AG, is able to complement the product offering with access to an extensive service network across northern Europe, operated under the Omniplus name.

Lothar Holder, Brand Spokesman for Setra Buses within EvoBus GmbH, admitted to a sense of pride at the handover ceremony for the first bus, held at the Setra CustomerCenter in Neu-Ulm: “I am very proud of the way in which we have been able to support the SNCF by delivering a tailor-made concept, along with the flexibility and individual ideas that were needed.”

Barbara Dalibard, a member of the SNCF Executive Board, expressed gratitude for the way in which the companies had cooperated with each other right from the very beginning and for the effort and expertise that had been put into the project: “The Setra coaches will allow us to offer our customers an extremely pleasant way of travelling, with safety as our top priority.”

SNCF controls rail travel in France

The state-owned railway company SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Franais) was founded in August 1937 and now operates virtually all rail services right across France, including since 1981 the high-speed train TGV, and sections of the Paris Metro system. The company is based in Paris and employs more than 160,000 staff.

There's four more races left in the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, and the whole Mercedes-Benz stable is gearing up to extend its lead in the three standings of DTM. After a bit of a disappointing showing in the last race at Nurburgring, the team is eager to bounce back.

"Zandvoort is one of my favourite tracks on the DTM calendar," said three-time winner Paffett, who is still leading the drivers' standings by 20 points. "The track offers a good mix of fast and slow turns―this variety gives me a lot of pleasure as a driver, and so I'm really looking forward to climbing back into the cockpit just one week after the Nürburgring."

"I'm now really looking forward to Zandvoort," said Jamie Green, who is third in the drivers' standings and is 2 points from second spot at the moment. "The dune circuit is quite challenging and makes very different demands on the vehicle as compared to last weekend at the Nürburgring. The fast sections of track really suit me and the car, and, as has so often been the case this season, I expect a close fight for the top positions."

Since the DTM races took to Zandvoort in 2001, Mercedes has won 5 out of the 11 races. Gary Paffett and company are looking to add to that tally this weekend.

"The New A-Class. The pulse of a new generation." That's the tagline for the advertising campaign for the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, a campaign that will cover print, television, and online channels, leading up to the official launch of the vehicle on September 15th.

According to Mercedes-Benz Cars Vice President for Brand Communication Anders Sundt Jensen, the campaign aims to build upon the already 40,000 pre-launch orders the automaker has already received for the A-Class. "The campaign is just as progressive and emotionally appealing as the new A-Class itself," said Jensen. "And perfectly reflects what our compact Mercedes model stands for: strikingly passionate design, pure dynamism, exemplary safety and unique digital networking capabilities."

Print ads come with a QR code that, when scanned via a mobile device, will lead the viewer to an interactive site that collects all the materials for the A-Class. You can go straight and visit www.mercedes-benz.com/a-class to view the interactive site. It's a bit heavy on the graphics side, though.

There will also be 5 spots for television, and each one is geared toward highlighting particular features of the new A-Class through situations depicted in the commercials.

In addition, there's currently a road show in Europe that should run until the end of October. The automaker has also partnered with Electronic Arts to promote the new A-Class within its SimCity Social Facebook game.

This ad campaign is slated to continue until end of October 2012, and it will be available online until December.

What’s not to love about food and art? The two come together in what is called the "MERCEDES DRIVE THRU," a temporary and driveable restaurant that’s designed by British food artists Sam Bompas and Harry Parr.

The aim is to provide "an exceptional sensory experience" highlighted by good food and some light art, accomplished by the duo with help from the Jason Bruges Studio, a multimedia collective in the UK.

A new Mercedes-Benz A-Class will be one of the main draws of the restaurant, staged artistically to highlight the design and make it interact with the whole installation and light show. Basically, the car is used so guests can go through the building as they place their particular orders and with the lights all in the background. It’s an interactive activity that should excite many a guest.

"Mercedes is a brand with a high standard of quality, and the aesthetics of Mercedes design are a great inspiration for us," said Bompas. "We create luxury dining, Mercedes produces luxury cars―working together to create the world’s best “drive thru” is therefore an obvious idea for what will be a remarkable feat of cooperation."

This driveable restaurant can be found in the lobby of the Selfridge Hotel, found in Oxford Street (Mayfair) and guests can go there between September 13 to 16. If you’re in the area, you might want to check it out―it should offer quite a visual and gastronomic ride.

V2V MercedesBenz Mercedes Benz Supports USDOTs V2V Model Deployment Trials

Mercedes-Benz, through its MBRDNA, or Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, is supporting a massive field test that seeks to evaluate the Vehicle-to-Vehicle Model Deployment program of the United States Department of Transportation.

V2V Model Deployment aims to improve automotive safety, making use of wireless communications technology. The field trial, launched in Ann Arbor, Michigan, involves some 2,800 vehicles of the commercial, passenger, and transport variety. That is easily the largest field trial of connected vehicles, and it also involves various sectors like the government and the academe, apart from the automotive industry.

This V2V trial involves the use of 5.9 GHz DSRC, or Dedicated Short Range Communications. Mercedes-Benz, in an ongoing effort to help achieve accident-free driving, continues to support trials such as this one and continues to work with other automakers as well as government bodies in both Europe and the United States.

In the trial, a total of 8 C300 passenger cars and 3 Freightliner trucks were fitted with the DSRC systems. Passenger vehicle systems come with LED lighting for the dashboard that light up when there’s an impending risk of a collision, thus warning the driver of the potential danger. The systems used on the commercial vehicles are different, relying instead on tablets installed within the cockpit in order to show the warnings.

Data collection and analysis will be ongoing through a period of one year, during which residents of Ann Arbor will drive the cars around the area.

While previously considered as a potentially record-setting vintage car, the rare 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster owned by Prussian baroness Gisela von Krieger and her family still managed to snag a pretty sum. The vehicle’s final number at the Pebble Beach auction was $11.77 million.

Gooding & Co. expected the vehicle to shatter the world record for a vehicle’s auction price, with the same auctioneer setting that figure―a cool $16.4 million―with the sale of a 1957 Testarossa last year. Those expectations are based on the rarity of this vintage Mercedes-Benz model, not to mention the fact that this Special Roadster was owned only by a couple of von Krieger nobility.

The auction price is actually $10.7 million with a 10 percent premium, putting the total at $11.77 million. While not as impressive as beating a world record, that figure is certainly nothing to scoff at, and the Mercedes-Benz was still easily the top grosser in the auction.

The event was held right after the Concours d’Elegance auto show.

Jamie Green was the best Mercedes-Benz team finisher on what was a bit of a lacklustre outing from the other drivers at the Nurburgring leg of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season. Green finished fourth, and drivers' championship leader Gary Paffett placed just sixth, although he still holds a comfortable lead over BMW's Bruno Spengler, who won this race.

Paffett has 103 points to Spengler's 83, while Green is at third with 81. Mercedes's HWA Team is still on top of the team standings with 127 points, while the automaker paces its two competitors with 237 points in the manufacturers' standings.

"That was a tough race in high temperatures and against some tough competition," exclaimed Green. "A P4 finish after starting from seventh on the grid is a respectable result � I'm quite satisfied under the circumstances and after the difficult qualifying."

"Today's race went much better than qualifying," said Paffett, who qualified at P11. "Sixth place is a decent result, but more points might have been possible given our pace today. Unfortunately, there was a bit of a hiccup during the second pit stop, but that's simply part and parcel of motor racing."

DTM racing continues next weekend at the Circuit Park Zandvoort in the Netherlands. Expect Paffett and company to bounce back.

2013 Mercedes-Benz new colors

Our very first 2013 Cinnabar Red vehcile arrived over the weekend and I thought a little comparison was in order. From left to right you have a 2013 ML350 in Cinnabar Red, a 2013 CLS550 in Storm Red and a 2013 C250 in Mars Red. Cinnabar Red is the least red of the group. I would say it is a reddish-brown with lots of copper metallic. The Storm Red is what I would call a candy apple red. Mars Red is the traditional bright red you would expect for a color called Red. I know pictures are no substitute for seeing them in person…but I perhaps side-by-side it will help you see the scale of red-ness.

It's been a while since the sort-of All-Star break of the 2012 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season, but we're primed for the resumption of DTM action this weekend. Mercedes-Benz will be looking to strengthen their hold on the top slot in the manufacturers' standings, and we'll be counting on the usual guys like Gary Paffett and Jamie Green to produce solid results to maintain their places atop the drivers' standings.

"The first half of the season was nearly perfect from my perspective: two wins, two podiums and a P4 finish after starting from last on the grid," said Paffett, who accomplished a rare feat of getting the trifecta of pole position, fastest lap, and race win right here in 2004. "I've already won one DTM race at the Nürburgring… My victory in the 2004 season is quite a few years ago now, so I wouldn't mind starting the second half of the season in the same way as the season opener at Hockenheim―with a win."

Jamie Green also recognized his strong performance in the first half of the season and is looking forward to a good start for the latter half. "I've only made one podium appearance in a DTM race at the Nürburgring, so I'll be delighted if I can repeat the experience this time round."

A rare 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster is set to go up for grabs at an auction by Gooding & Company, and many believe this rare car has what it takes to break the auction record for vehicles when it goes up for bidding at Pebble Beach, right after the Concours d'Elegance show.

Some say that the vehicle could easily fetch $10 million, but there are also some who think it can go high enough to exceed the current vehicle auction price record of $16.4 million, which achieved in 2011 for a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa car that was used by the manufacturer's team to compete at Le Mans. The auction's final figure was actually $14.9 million, but the premium added accounts for why the total price was $16.4 million.

While that Testa Rossa was clearly historic, this 540K Special Roadster does not come short in terms of providing a blast from the past. The car used to be owned by the German baroness Gisela von Krieger up until her death in the year 1989, and it was owned by her family from 1936.

When the vehicle was discovered at some barn in Connecticut, it seemed that time stood still within. It is said that throwback Connecticut and New York maps were still present, along with some cigarette butts on an ashtray and a driving glove. The vehicle is a clear match for the aristocratic and luxurious nature of von Krieger and her Prussian nobility.

The vehicle is currently in the possession of Lee Herrington, a businessman based in New Hampshire who also happens to be a car collector.

This is a very informative First Drive by Motor Trend as they had all three versions of the 2013 GL-Class available at the same time!
